Key information on Kameeldoring Wood
The origin and characteristics of the Kameeldoring Tree (Camelthorn Tree)
Known by many names Vachellella eriolobus, Acacia eiolobus, Camel Thorn, Kameldoring (in Afrikaans) and Giraffe tree. Endemic to the semi-desert regions of Southern Africa the Kameeldoring tree is a species of acacia that grows to be about 30 meters tall and has a lifespan of up to 200 years.
This large umbrella-shaped tree is considered a keystone species with many other species and ecosystem parameters of the African Savannahs dependent on it. This is why the Giraffe tree is also known and referred to as the “Tree of Life” These remarkable trees are resilient and can tolerate long periods of time without water in the unforgiving African sun.
Kameeldoring trees are harvested for their wood, which is used for a variety of purposes such as firewood, construction, and furniture-making. Kameeldoring wood is also used to make charcoal.
Our Kameeldoring braai wood is taken from the branches that fall from the trees due to their heavy weight (extremely dense).
