Boerewors and a taste of South Africa – Leamington Spa Food Festival

Leamington Spa Food Festival September 2021 – a taste of South Africa with boerewors

Thank you for coming to see us at the Leamington Food Festival which took place earlier last month and for enjoying a taste of South Africa with our boerewors rolls! We had such a great time meeting many of you and cooking ‘boerie’ rolls on the braai with our BBQ wood 😊.

It was our first event working with Ben’s Biltong / Ben’s Meat and Heat Emporium and what a weekend it was!

The weather was great, and the festival was busier than ever! With live entertainment and around 110 exhibitors, there was plenty to eat and drink, something for every taste –

Let’s bring on the South African flavours!

We decided to offer a taste of South Africa with our Boerewors rolls (South African sausage) cooked on the braai.

What is boerewors?

Popular across Southern Africa, Boerewors literally means ‘farmers sausage’ in Afrikaans. Traditionally, boerewors is made of minced meat (usually beef) with an herb and spice blend in a sausage casing. Boerewors has a signature spiral shape like Cumberland sausages.

Our beef boerewors were spiced with coriander, black pepper, and nutmeg along with vinegar. This combination of spices and vinegar creates a unique flavour, specific to the South African cuisine. On the side, we made a tomato and onion relish.

Those boerewors rolls were yummy 😊!

We found a great recipe from Jan Braai. For those who don’t know Jan Braai, his real name is Jan Scannell and he lives to braai. He is on a mention to unite all South African around a fire. You can find more on his website

He shares a boerewors recipe with a tomato relish and cheese. We recommend you try; onions, pepper, garlic, chili, paprika, tomatoes and apricot jam…we love this relish! Here is the recipe

A classic food for a traditional braai

Most importantly, boerewors is a classic food for a traditional South African braai.

Along with our authentic Southern African braai wood, we took our barbecues to the food, and we started cooking. Kameeldoring, Sekelbos and Rooikrans, we used a mix. You can find our Southern African BBQ wood on our shopping page

The smell of the boerewors grilling on our premium braai/BBQ wood was a winner! It brought so many of you to our stand. And it was awesome to hear your feedback. Some of you enjoyed a taste of South African food for the first time and many of you couldn’t resist to enjoy a boerie roll like you would do ‘back home’.

Thank you for your support!

Team Let's braaiWe love the atmosphere of the Leamington Food Festival! It was great meeting so many of you, and we appreciate your support.
