But a good night is easily ruined by bad wood. If your fire is blowing black smoke and burning out every twenty minutes, you are using the wrong fuel. You need Mopane logs.

Mopane comes from the Colophospermum mopane tree in Southern Africa. It is an incredibly dense, heavy ironwood. That density makes it perfect for fire pits, braais, pizza ovens, and indoor stoves. It burns intensely hot and creates a beautiful, bright flame.
Cheap kiln-dried logs burn out quickly. Mopane creates a solid bed of coals and reaches maximum heat within 40 minutes. You get a roaring fire that actually lasts.
This wood is naturally seasoned under the brutal African sun. The moisture content is incredibly low. That means it burns clean. You get zero black smoke blowing in your face. It also leaves very little ash. Cleaning your fire pit the next day is easy.
Lighting a Mopane fire fills your yard with a pleasant, musky aroma. If you are cooking over the pit, that natural smoke enhances the flavor of your grilled meats and vegetables.

You need a solid method to get heavy hardwood burning.
Get your tinder, some good kindling, and your Mopane logs.
Place your tinder in the middle of the pit. Stack your kindling around it in a teepee shape. Put one or two smaller Mopane logs around the outside.
Strike a match and light the center. Let the kindling catch properly. Once you have a strong flame, start adding your larger pieces of wood.
Less moisture equals a happy fire. Store your Mopane logs in a dry place. Keep them in a garage or shed if you can. If you leave them outside, stack them properly and cover them so they do not get soaked by rain or snow.
