Master your braai weekend with these barbecue tips

The May bank holiday is almost here. We can’t wait. It’s the unofficial start of summer. So it’s time to drag the kit into the garden and invite your mates over for a proper feast.

Here’s how you get it right.

Get the Hardware Sorted

A great cookout starts with the right unit. Our 900mm stainless steel mobile braai is built for serious outdoor cooking. It features a built-in ember maker. So you build your fire on one side and drag the glowing coals under your meat as you need them. This gives you a constant, reliable supply of heat. The grid has three height settings. Drop it low for a quick sear. Keep it high to cook slowly. It also has tough plastic wheels to roll easily across the grass.

Hitting the road for the weekend? You need our stainless steel camping braai. It’s robust and completely portable. The split lid folds open to give you two side tables for your spices and tongs. It includes a zinc-plated grill with two height levels and a removable ash tray. It packs away perfectly into a canvas cover case.

The Essential Kit

A closed, hinged grid basket is absolutely vital. We call it a rooster. It’s brilliant for flipping a whole chicken flattie or making a braaibroodjie. That’s a traditional South African grilled cheese sandwich. You’ll also need a heavy-duty pair of tongs.

Burn the Right Fuel

Premium hardware demands premium fuel. Real wood gives your food an authentic flavour. We import ultra-dense hardwoods straight to the UK. Sekelbos burns incredibly hot and adds a rich, smoky taste to steaks. Kameeldoring gives off a beautiful natural fragrance. Mopane and Rooikrans create excellent coals that last for ages. Don’t forget your kindling.

Build the Perfect Fire

Start with very dry kindling. Build a small square tower in the middle of your braai. Lay two pieces parallel. Put two more on top going the opposite way. You must leave gaps for the cold air to flow in. Put a fire starter in the middle and light it.

But what if you don’t have fire starters? Just rub cooking oil on an empty egg carton and light that instead.

Once the kindling catches, add your larger logs using the exact same tower method. Don’t pack the wood too tightly. A fire needs space to breathe.

Prep and Clean Up

Take your meat out of the fridge early. Marinate it well to keep it moist over the hot coals. Keep the beers ice cold.

Clean the grid while it’s still hot. Just stick half an onion on a braai fork and rub it hard across the metal. It strips the grease right off without any harsh chemicals. And if you’re using the camping braai, that grid goes straight into the dishwasher.

Protect your investment before you head inside. Grab one of our heavy-duty, water-resistant covers tailored specifically for the 900mm mobile braai.

Happy braaiing!
